Mindfulness

Jon Kabat-Zinn designed the 8-week Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) course (1979) through his work at the Stress Reduction Clinic at the University of Massachusetts and has enabled thousands of people to engage more fully in their own health and well-being. He claims that the course can be exceedingly challenging, but definitely do-able!

Mindfulness is simple to practice, yet like so many things it requires effort and discipline to work against our already automated and habitual unawareness. The great news is mindfulness is a skill that can be developed through practice, just like any other skill. For the MBSR programme to have the greatest outcomes it does rely on the individual making a strong commitment to themselves, to engage in daily mindfulness practice.

Here is some feedback from other participants

"The course helped me immensely during a very stressful time, I learned so much about the brain and how it operates under stress, it is possible to break old patterns with kindness. I enjoyed the insight Brodie provided, her guided meditations, the lightness she brought to the topic and our group discussions."
"I notice that I observe myself much better, rush less and pay more attention to my emotions. I'm less reactive, feel more calm, confident and appreciative. Last but not least, I have more energy."

The MBSR programme consists of 1.5 hours online per week for 8 weeks, plus daily home practice between 20 - 40 minutes per day. As mentioned, this can be challenging to fit in, but in my experience very rewarding! I will be expecting you to commit to your own personal practice over the 8-week programme so you can fully develop your mindfulness skill.

It is the continual practice that supports us to have greater awareness of when we are living purely in a thinking-based mode and choosing to live differently. It is very easy to routinely and unknowingly expend huge amounts of energy in reacting automatically and unconsciously to the outside world and to our own inner experiences. By strengthening our mindfulness ability, we can simply be present in the moment and make choices about how we respond or react to the environment around us.

Another way of considering this is, if you were aiming to get fit, doing 30 minutes exercise once a week would have little or no effect. If you exercised for 30 minutes every day for 8 weeks you would be considerably fitter than when you started. Mindfulness is exactly the same. Jon Kabat-Zinn says, ‘you don’t have to like it, just do it!’ Like developing any new skill, practice is the essence of mindfulness.
